Lazy Like Me: 10 Microscopic Ways to Go Green

This is a guest post by Youth Advisory Board member Daniela, senior at The Harker School in Northern California.

Oh, silly Kermit. You told the viewers of Sesame Street that “it’s not easy being green” – could you be the newest scapegoat for convincing Americans that is too hard to fight global warming?! Well, I could either call in the mob with blazing torches or write up a list to prove you wrong.

Ladies and gentlemen, please read and enact these brainless ways to treat this Muppet-filled planet a little bit better… lazy-person style:

1. Never pour clean water down the drain. Whether you’re pouring out the remains of your tea kettle, water bottle, or vegetable-steaming pot, show a little love to your plants instead! I don’t care if it’s a house plant or the bush outside your house… they’ll like the H2O better than yo’ disposal.

Going Back to School, Earth Friendly!

This is a guest post by ACE Field Correspondent Jae Williams, sophomore at Dougherty Valley High School in Northern California.

Earlier this month, I received my first ACE Field Correspondent assignment: how do you go back to school eco friendly?
I came up with this tip that is great for the environment and fun, too!

Before the era of BYOB (Bring Your Own Bag), more earth conscious shoppers would choose paper over plastic. But since earth warriors everywhere now have their own ways of carrying groceries home, you may have some paper bags laying around. Here’s a fun way to get rid of the bags and cover your books.

You’ll need a textbook, a paper bag, tape, and a pair of scissors.

Earth Friendly Hydration

This is a guest post by Jae Williams, a rising sophomore at Dougherty Valley High School in Northern California.

A few months ago, I was watching a video on Youtube by nigahiga, who does popular and funny lip-syncs. It was about these GlobalTap fountains in the San Francisco area. There was even one in the San Francisco Airport! Basically, a GlobalTap fountain is a public fountain designed for reusable water bottle. Each fountain is a clean, filtered, completely free source to refill a reusable water bottle. This promotes use of an eco-bottle instead of individual plastic water bottles.

This Summer, Green your BBQ!

Edited by Boston Educator Brian Stilwell, tips from the Center for American Progress article.

Nothing quite says “summer” like an outdoor BBQ, and at ACE, we’re as excited as you are to get outside and start grilling those burgers and veggie burgers! However, have you ever stopped to consider the carbon impact of this activity?

According to the Center for American Progress, more than 60 million households are expected to fire up the grill during each holiday weekend this summer, releasing approximately 225,000 metric tons of carbon into the atmosphere! Whoa — who knew?

But never fear, the Center for American Progress didn’t just supply us with a startling statistic, they also armed us with six easy steps we can all take this summer to significantly reduce your BBQ emissions. Here they are:

1. Use a propane, gas, or electric grill. These three grills burn more efficiently than charcoal or wood, which means cleaner air for you to breathe and fewer pollutants released into the atmosphere.

2. Use natural charcoal. If you do choose charcoal choose a natural lump brand—you can find a great list of brands over at greenyour.com. Avoid briquettes, which can contain coal dust, sodium nitrate, sawdust, starch, or limestone. These can all release toxic byproduct. Briquettes soaked in lighter fluid are the worst offenders—they release volatile organic compounds, or VOCs that contribute to smog when burned.

3. Lay off the lighter fluid. Petroleum-based lighter fluid releases harmful VOCs, too. To get your grill going, use a chimney starter, electrical charcoal starter, or another do-it-yourself fire starter…

Green your Summer Road Trip!

Edited by Boston Educator Brian Stilwell, tips from the Center for American Progress article.

Summer’s here and you know what that means: it’s road tripping time!  However, before you pile all your friends in the car for that unforgettable cross-country experience, take a few minutes to green your vehicle.  In just six simple steps, you can save yourself some serious cash, slash your emissions and keep your car running smoothly for all 3000 miles.

Here’s what the Center for American Progress recommends:

1.) Go farther on a gallon. You can boost the fuel efficiency of your car by as much as 25 percent by braking less, driving the speed limit, dropping unnecessary weight in the car, and inflating tires to their maximum allowable pressure.

2.) Use less air conditioning. This one’s tough to stick to in the summer, but using air conditioning hurts fuel efficiency. A Consumer Reports test on a Honda Accord showed that using air conditioning while driving at 65 miles per hour reduced the vehicle’s gas mileage by more than 3 miles per gallon. Wall Street Journal columnist Jonathan Welsh suggests closing the windows and sunroof on the highway because opening them often causes enough drag to offset any savings from turning off the air conditioner. Using the car’s vents might circulate enough air to keep you comfortable on days when the weather isn’t particularly hot or when the car’s interior hasn’t been preheated by sitting in the sun.

3.) Take care of your car. Make sure your car gets regular tune-ups and maintenance, such as oil changes. A healthy car will burn less gas and require fewer trips to the shop for repairs.

4.) Avoid idling. Your car gets zero miles per gallon when it’s idling. When Consumer Reports let a Buick Lucerne idle for 10 minutes while warming up, it burned about an eighth of a gallon of gas. A smaller engine would probably burn less, but idling still adds up over time. Turn off your engine if you expect to sit for more than about 30 seconds.

5.) Freshen the air without chemicals. Ruth Logan at Examiner.com reports that car deodorizers have allergens that can cause some people to experience headaches or eye irritation. The fresheners also contain toxic chemicals such as petroleum distillates, which can irritate or damage your lungs; phthalates, which can interfere with hormone production; and benzene compounds, which have been found to be carcinogenic, according to the Children’s Environmental Health Network, a nonprofit safety organization.

6.) Switch to cleaner cleaning products. When it’s time to wax the hood or polish the hubcaps, look for greener or natural alternatives. Many car-cleaning products likely contain ammonia, volatile organic compounds, nonphenolethoxolates, and abrasive detergents.

Though following these tips won’t magically turn your car into a hybrid, they will reduce fuel use, protect your health, and help your car perform better. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you can always look into converting your car that runs on waste vegetable oil here.

Student shares five hot green summer tips

Written by Teniola Ayoola, a Junior at Bowie High School in Bowie, Maryland.

Summer is in full session, and from grilling those burgers to taking a dip in the pool, and also handling other personal business, it sure is super easy to get distracted, and lose focus on taking care of our environment, but, thanks to ACE for saving the day- or the summer- here are tips on staying GREEN this Summer, and making a big difference without losing your cool.

1. Don’t start your Summer without picking up one of these super-cool-totally-awesome solar charging devices. Save green and BE green with a solar device or backpack such as The Lenmar or plug into the sun with the The Solio, so that whether you’re heading to the beach, or going camping, you would be equipped to power up portable devices on solar power- free of charge!

2. It is Summer! Which means for a lot of people, time to hit the grill. This year, why not try something that will contribute positive changes to the environment and also your health? According to Earthsave.org, for every pound of beef NOT consumed, 2,500- 5,000 gallons of water is saved! Crazy, huh? So, for your next cookout, instead of firing up a hamburger, try a better alternative or find recipes at Allrecipes.com. Also, while you’re busy green-grilling, try propane which burns much more cleaner than wood or charcoal briquettes…

10 Easy and Fun Fourth of July and Summer Green Tips

Written by ACE intern Caitlin Grey and ACE DC Educator Daisy Pistey-Lyhne

1. Up in your grill

If your family is having a Fourth of July BBQ…. Buy 100% All Natural Hardwood Lump Charcoal, natural eco-friendly charcoal! Most coals you can find have dangerous chemicals and emit lots of smoke, but these coals are more natural, better, and burn faster. What’s to lose?

2. Hang me up to dry

Instead of using the energy vampire that is the dryer, hang the laundry out to dry in the warm weather for a natural, cheaper, and easier way to do your chores.

3. Sun Tea!

Instead of boiling or microwaving water for tea, put some tea bags in some water and leave it outside to steep in the warm summer sun for a delicious afternoon treat.

4. Eco-partay

If your family is throwing a July 4th BBQ or Party, encourage your family members to use reusable utensils, plates, and bowls that you can wash instead of paper plates and Styrofoam. It’s classier that way anyway.

5. Enjoy farmer’s markets!

Summer is the fruitiest season—peaches, nectarines, cherries—what’s not to love?? Get out and meet some of your local farmers and support local and organic businesses by getting your groceries at farmer’s markets. Turn grocery shopping into a fun social activity and go with your friends! Find local farmer’s markets near you here.

There are five more tips, don’t forget to read more!
