Firsthand Account: Shreya’s Journey to the White House

Written by Shreya Indukuri, ACE Youth Advisory Board Member and incoming Senior at the Harker School in San Jose, CA.

Exactly a week ago, Daniela and I had the amazing opportunity to speak at the White House. I know, pretty unbelievable, right?
We were fortunate enough to have the amazing opportunity to speak at the White House Grid Modernization Event, and to meet with Secretary of Energy, Steve Chu, and the Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack. We spoke about our SmartPowerEd.org work at various local high schools and how low-cost smart energy technology is transforming schools. We were even streamed live on the whitehouse.gov website! It was so incredible and we were pleasantly surprised to have such high-ranking officials applaud and support our efforts! One of the officials even told us that we practically “upstaged” two secretaries.

Aside from the incredible speaking opportunity, the rest of the Grid Modernization Event was pretty interesting in and of itself. The term “grid modernization” sounds complicated but the event basically created discussion among technology leaders, businessmen, and on government officials on how to revamp our country’s currently high-carbon-emission electric grid.

We attended a breakout group where government and tech leaders discussed scaling new energy efficiency models in the US. Neither Daniela nor I are experts on energy policy so we expected to get lost in all of the jargon but we actually found it engaging and practical. It was great to see how much people cared about implementing new solutions across the US and if you listened carefully, a lot of their ideas made sense and seemed feasible…

Who’s hearing about school energy use? Maybe President Obama…

By Shreya Indukuri, Junior at the Harker School in San Jose, CA, and ACE Youth Advisory Board Member

To sum up our long weekend in Washington, D.C. at Powershift 2011 in one word: incredible!

From April 15-18, Daniela and I met some amazing people and got inspired by young people doing some awesome things in their communities. Check out more about it in Daniela’s blog post.

Monday, April 18th was a particularly eventful day for us because we had the wonderful opportunity to meet Aneesh Chopra, Chief Technology Officer of the United States (as advisor to President Obama), and Arun Majumdar, the Acting Under Secretary Of Energy and the Director of ARPA-E (the Advanced Research Project Agency on Energy for the federal government).

First, we visited the Office of Science and Technology Policy, right next to the White House! After an awesome introduction from the Alliance for Climate Education (ACE) on the importance of climate education for youth through their ACE multimedia assembly, we talked about how we were lucky enough to use the resources provided by ACE to start our own environmental project at our school. The smart energy system we installed saved our school thousands of dollars and we had a 250% return on investment along with cutting our school’s energy bill by 13% in one year!

Mr. Chopra loved our project and he pledged to work on a plan to have schools benchmark their energy consumption using the EPA’s Portfolio Manager. This is fantastic because energy benchmarking is the first step of our 4-step smart energy school project that we work on in our organization, SmartPowerEd.

Biobus Day 4: skatepark, solar concert, and the San Diego police

“360? Okay.”

A young skater who looked about 13 years old dropped into a 15 ft vert ramp from the 2006 X-Games. Teens and kids on skateboards, bikes, and scooters were shredding all over the 40,000 sq ft Krause Family skatepark in San Diego.

The ACE Biobus arrived on the scene to provide further entertainment. The Wiley One unpacked instruments and amplifiers for a solar-powered concert on the rooftop of Bluebird.
