One man’s trash is another man’s…creative costume!

By Jen Halstead, senior and president of the Sanford High School Environmental Club in Sanford, Maine.

Intimidation washed over me as I looked over the eyes of the Sanford Environmental Club staring at me with disbelief in their eyes. Soon, the feeling faded. With or without their help, I was going to host a Green Fashion Show to spread awareness about our impact on local and global environments. Once the wheels got in motion and we talked about the idea in months to come, I gained the support that I was seeking, but not relying on.

With the support and brain power of the club, we put the idea out to the school. By speaking to each of the classes during advisory, we gained support, gained interest, and educated all at once. In the five minute spiel we had, we reminded people that each person doing one thing adds up to a lot, and as individual, and as a school, we can influence others to lessen their impact on the environment.

Our focus, however, was to make people aware of Marine life we affect, our chosen theme for the show. Therefore, we picked a local and global charity to donate our profits to, and let the school know that they would be a part of changing the world by participating and supporting the fashion show…

ACE grant gives Portland recycling a boost

By Victoria Webber, ACE Ambassador for Portland High School’s Environmental Club in Portland, Maine.

The Portland High School Environmental Club has about twelve dedicated members now and have had a good year. This year we have done a day of hunger to raise money for Heifer International. We successfully raised $480. We also started a Clynk fundraiser. Clynk is an organization for which we collect redeemable cans and bottles to raise money. The bags we have for clynk are just on the floor in classrooms because we have nothing to put them in. Over the past few years we have looked into putting a green roof on our school and hope to get one next year. Our club is very interested in reducing wast and helping the environment.

ACE has come to Portland High School twice. They came once in 2009 and then again the next year in 2010. The presentation was all about reducing waste and our individual footprints. It was also about getting connected with other people.

A new life for sneakers and phones

By Zoe Blickenderfer, President of Somerville High School’s Green Club, Somerville, MA

At the beginning of every year, at our first few Green Club meetings we always come up with lots of good ideas for projects and goals, but it is always helpful to go to the ACE leadership trainings because connecting with other clubs and teams is a great way to learn about new project ideas and get advice on how to make your projects a success!

At the last leadership training our members went to, there was one project in particular that another club shared that we found interesting and had never thought of before: a sneaker and electronic drive!

This is how it works:

Every day, for a set period of time (say, a month), let the school know through morning/afternoon announcements or a bulletin that you are collecting used electronics and sneakers and have them deliver them to a certain room or teacher. It’s as easy as that! After all of the goods have been collected there are a few ways to proceed.

We decided to give our sneakers to Nike® to be recycled, but have not yet decided which organization to give our electronics to. We have narrowed it down to Cell Phones for Soldiers and an organization that gives cell phones to battered women, Cell Phones for Life. These are certainly not the only options for there are other organizations that do similar things. (This can also be an easy fundraiser; there are some places that will take your electronics for money!)

This project is awesome for many reasons…

Noble Earthworks Presents the First Annual Earthweek

By Molly Cleveland, Noble Earthworks ACE Ambassador, April 9, 2011

Noble High School’s Earthweek has begun! Our preparation began with creating posters and informing the school about the events we planned.

Here are some of our dedicated workers setting up for Earthweek.

Each day of Earthweek is represented by a different color for various environmental issues:

Monday is blue for Recycling
Tuesday is Gray for Pollution
Wednesday is Green for Conservation
Thursday is Yellow for Alternative Energy
Friday is Tie Dye for Climate Change

Our Earthweek events include:

- A Trash Clean-Up day where students create trash pick up teams, and which ever team picks up the most trash win tickets to see a movie at a local theater.

Speech Success!

Awesome news! Last month, our New England Youth Rep, Enxhi Popa, gave her first-ever speech for over 200 people at the Northeast Food Justice Summit. She did an amazing job. Her speech brought up the ol’ lump in my throat as I listened to her articulate her powerful personal story about why she cares about Food Justice.

What was it like for her to speak in front of 200 people at the conference? Read on to find out!

Wearable waste

By Jen Halstead, President, Sanford Environmental Club, ME

Stop and think for a moment.

When was the last time you saw someone wearing an outfit made of objects we throw out on a daily basis?

I have a hard time with this question, as do most people. On a daily basis, we toss objects into trashcans, and hopefully, recycling bins. On a daily basis, how much we truly waste is not a common thought pondered…

Well, I wanted to make people think about waste. I didn’t, however, want to say “You’re doing this wrong.” Not to mention, who wants to listen to a boring presentation?

I knew it needed to be fun; then, it hit me: a Green Fashion Show.

With a Green Fashion Show, contestants and audience members will have fun. While having fun, they will learn about the impacts we have on the environment. Then, we can help people learn about how to reduce that impact.

Greasy Inspiration

By Alyssa Solomon, Senior at Andover High School, MA

Change follows inspiration. It only takes one person’s words or actions to motivate another, sparking a fire of change, as I have learned firsthand.

Five years ago, I was deeply influenced during a seventh grade assembly at Wood Hill Middle School. A young man stood on the stage and told us his name was Mike Parziale. In jeans and a T-shirt, he was casual in dress and tone, but what he told us fascinated me instantly. Parziale had spent the past year driving around the country in his grease-powered van, while creating a documentary for MTV.

His innovative, seemingly impossible business, called Grease Not Gas, focused on converting diesel cars, trucks and buses to operate on vegetable oil. Since then, my lifestyle and dreams have been forever changed…

Learning to Lead

By Hannah Krieger, Senior at Andover High School, MA

A.C.E. Leadership Training – Museum of Science – February 2011

The A.C.E. leadership training at the Museum of Science this past February was my second time attending an A.C.E. leadership training. I pleased that is was slightly varied from my last training, although I’m sure if it was exactly the same I still would have learned a lot…

Sanford High School secures win in Amazing ACE Race

Written by Jen Halstead, Sanford Environmental Club President, Sanford, Maine.

Two years ago, I joined Sanford High School’s Environmental Club and became our un-official president. I got wind of ACE and we entered the Amazing ACE Race competition last fall. We took on a series of successful projects, from a DOT project to a school-wide, and roaringly successful, Green Week.

This spring, we’re planning a Green Fashion Show, another Green Week and a vamped up DOT project. Watch our video to see what we accomplished around our school…
