Paperless Valentine’s Day

This is a guest post by Field Correspondent Molly Cleveland.

Every Valentine’s Day people all over the world buy, make, or print Valentine’s Day cards. But, instead of showing our love by wasting paper why don’t we spread the love for our planet by having a totally paperless Valentine’s Day!Instead of making paper cards create digital video messages or creative emails! This way it is much more personal as well. And, instead of buying cardboard boxes of chocolate and candies, try making your own treats and use recycled lunch baggies or other reusable products to package them in. Be creative this Valentine’s Day and don’t just spread the love for your friends and family, but for our wonderful planet as well. Happy Paperless Valentine’s Day!

The After Christmas Tree

This is a guest post by Field Correspondent Molly Cleveland.

How many of you went out to get a Christmas Tree this year? I’ll guess probably 100% of  you, but if you think about it, it’s pretty wasteful for us to cut down perfectly good trees to  put up in our houses for a month, and then throw them into our backyards when were  done with them. I read this Christmas Story when I was younger, that was called “The After Christmas Tree.”  The family in the story didn’t want to get rid of their tree after Christmas, so they “reused” it. They decorated the tree with pinecones dipped in peanut butter and then rolled in bird seed, cranberries, popcorn, and lights. After the tree was decorated they set it up outside for all of the birds, squirrels, chipmunks, etc to come and enjoy their “After Christmas Tree.” They kept it up for weeks after, until the tree finally died. If we all found creative ways to “reuse” our Christmas Trees, then maybe it wouldn’t be so wasteful to cut down a tree, just for a month.

Materials To Make “The After Christmas Tree.”
Pinecones
Bird Seed
Melted Peanut Butter
Cranberries
Popcorn
String
Newspaper, or paper bags to lay down because this project WILL get messy.

Going Green on Team

This is a guest post by ACE Ambassador and Field Correspondent Molly Cleveland, sophomore at Noble High School in Maine. “When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” – John Muir.

Noble Earthworks decided that we need to try and recruit more members into our club. Our school has too many students for only 10 of us to be part of the Green Movement. We know that there are students out there who want to get involved in our club, but just haven’t taken the initiative to join. So we came up with a plan!

Raise Your Voice!

This is a guest post by ACE Ambassador Molly Cleveland, sophomore at Nobel High School in New England.

The day started with introductions to all of the other student leaders, and without any instruction we all started in on a huge discussion about our Action Teams. We collaborated about what projects our schools were working on and projects we’ve done successfully. Then our ACE Educators introduced us to the “Story of Self.” We saw examples of different Stories of Selves and learned what a Story of Self should include. The ACE educators also talked a lot about communication to different groups of people, whom you might have to get support from to do specific action team projects. The entire day was filled with learning about how to be an effective communicator and how to bring your Story of Self into an effective message.

Noble High School’s Earthweek has begun! Our preparation began with creating posters and informing the school about the events we planned.

Here are some of our dedicated workers setting up for Earthweek.

Each day of Earthweek is represented by a different color for various environmental issues:

Friday is Tie Dye for Climate Change

Our Earthweek events include:

- A Trash Clean-Up day where students create trash pick up teams, and which ever team picks up the most trash win tickets to see a movie at a local theater.
