Energy Patrol – It’s Elementary! (and super cool!!)

Update: Listen to Julie Blum’s Song, here:

Quantcast

The following post is by Julie Blum in Westbrook, CT about the Program she’s running at the local elementary school!

Update for the ACE Blog – March 8, 2010

At the beginning of February, an “ Patrol” for Westbrook’s elementary school kids was initiated, and ever since then, I have been hearing about all kinds of positive reactions to the project.  Teachers say that the kids get very excited and enthusiastic about receiving the audit results from the Patrol, and they are reminding everyone to keep turning things off.  On their Kids’ News show in the mornings, the fourth graders have made quite a few announcements about the audits; these proclamations help to remind everyone to conserve as well.   At the end of the month, the classroom with the best overall audit results received a cute fuzzy white polar bear puppet, which they can keep in their room for all of March (see photo).  The current members of the Patrol (in the green shirts with the patrol logo we created) and some high school volunteers worked together to present the polar bear to the winning class.

We also recorded a new version of the song I wrote for the elementary school’s launch of the program.  We asked some Westbrook kids of all different ages (see photo) to contribute their voices to the recording.  After the recording took place, the kids were so eager that they immediately decided to make posters that they could hang around the school and share on Kids’ News.  Every classroom in the elementary school will receive a copy of the song, so the kids will be able to enjoy it in their classroom settings as well.

At the middle school, another Patrol exists, and the highest scoring grade received a prize as well.  Some efforts for other projects are also under way in the high school at this time.  Hopefully, a “ song” music video involving all kinds of members of our Westbrook community will come into being as soon as possible!

Well, it's good to see that the indoctrination of the youngest generation is proceeding at a rapid pace! Really? Fourth graders auditing their classmates and telling them to turn things off? What's next? Hey, you're not allowed to eat meat because it's made from cows which produce methane! You're not allowed to wear clothes, because the factories are run on electricity generated by coal plants! It's creepy to me… kind of like Energy Nazis, if you ask me.

What a great song! I hope it inspires kids to sing it and DO it. Anexcellent project.

I always feel more hopeful about the future when I see young people in-action doing something to preserve our earth for future generations! After decades of humans polluting without regard for their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, it's refreshing to see a new breed of guardians of our planet!! Westbrook rocks!

I see that earth's future is in good hands with Westbrook's young people in-action!!!! Decades of humans have consumed earth's resources and polluted without any regard to future generations. Keep up the good work Westbrook so that your grandchildren and great-grandchildren will have a livable planet!

I have seen this program in action. I can tell you that it is a great thing not only for the earth's resources but it also gives the children great pride. With the students being allowed to take charge of the process, it sends a message about how much they are trusted and valued. Kudos to the administration for supporting this project and to the kids for embracing it with such a positive spirit!

Great Song and video Julie! Nice work as usual!! I can tell this project took a lot of time and effort, you should be very proud of the end result. Your lyrics and sax playing were terrific, not to mention the wild life you captured on film. Kudos to you all for a job well done!

Conservation is a very important component of preserving our environment and our planet, particularly in light of the ever-increasing population here on earth. I applaud everyone who was invovled in putting together this Conservation video. Cheers!
