Senior Educator, Daisy Pistey-Lyhne welcomes students back to another great school year with ACE.
Meet the Team

Hello and welcome to ACE’s page for the Washington D.C. region!

Our D.C. office opened in January 2010, and since then, we’ve delivered our engaging, educational, multimedia presentation on climate science to more than 24,000 students at over 50 schools throughout D.C., Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania! We are also excited to be working with 30 Action Teams in the area.

Daisy has worked on environmental issues around the world, and been involved in environmental education in different ways. She has called D.C. home at different points in her life, and is glad to be building the leadership of local teens to make change - right here in the seat of global power! Johanna has lived around the world, and spent most of her formative years in North Carolina. She has called DC home for the last 3 years, and is excited to share her background in education, organizing, and environmental issues with youth in the DC region and North Carolina.

What's your favorite part about working in Washington D.C.?

We love working in the D.C. region because of the wide range of students in so many different neighborhoods and cities. While schools and communities may differ, we see students across the region caring about the future of their communities and the planet. We’re working to build a network of educated youth leaders in the region, helping youth from DC, VA, MD and even PA to meet up and collaborate on cooling the climate.

What's the most inspiring student project you have worked on in Washington D.C.?

We’ve already helped to start or re-invigorate action teams and environmental clubs doing projects on over 20 campuses, from school gardens to green proms and green locker clean-out days. New Hope Academy’s Action Team was new this year, and got going with a rockin’ green locker clean-out - it was a lot of fun! We look forward to more great projects this year! Check out our updated and enhanced climate projects for students.

What's a fun fact about Washington D.C.'s team?

Daisy has worked with a diverse array of teens, from urban, suburban and rural areas, both in the classroom and in the backcountry. She’s worked with environmental leaders from Mongolia to Moscow to Santiago de Chile, and here in the U.S. But the teens she has met through ACE have been the most inspiring group yet!

Learn more about the specific impacts of climate change in the DC area

  • This summer’s heat wave in the mid-Atlantic was intense, not to mention the intense rainstorms and near hurricane winds! Heat waves and extreme weather are only becoming more frequent as the planet and oceans warm.
  • Climate change will also have big impacts on our local water bodies, especially the Chesapeake Bay. As sea level rises, many wetlands and coastal communities are threatened by flooding and increased impacts due to storms. Native species are also threatened by warmer water temperatures, and on-going restoration projects will likely be make ineffective. Our local ecosystem and our human communities are at risk in the mid-Atlantic, so it’s important that we take action now to protect them.
